Kids can feel like stars in June when their sensational plays in 7-on-7 are highlighted in social media.

Even before June, when all-star 7-on-7 teams are formed, players travel to national tournaments for more glory.

It is the 7-on-7 passing games in Arizona high schools that have turned June into a season in itself, without the hard-shell helmets and shoulder padsbut with the intensity of tackle football in September.

We were beating a lot of teams. I think they felt embarrassed. That calls for confrontations.

You have to hold your players accountable whether its 7-on-7 or regular season.

Some coaches will travel to California for more tournaments.

I think 7-on-7 is great for the QB and receivers to build chemistry and compete against other schools and see different coverages, Central offensive coordinator Chandler Hovik said in a message. But there are some coaches who are willing to risk all football technique and do whatever they have to do to win 7-on-7, which makes it unrealistic at times. Defenders holding guys 10 yards off the ball. Quarterbacks not even dropping back, just standing there to throw. And when there are no refs, some coaches refuse to believe that their team is doing anything illegal football-wise during the game and thats when issues occur.

Some tournaments use certified referees. Others self-officiate between coaches.

College coaches already know who has the ability to play at their level, said Smith, the son of Larry Smith, who was head coach at UA, USC and Missouri. These college coaches use their own camps to see the kids they are already interested in. Watching those kids at their camps during 7-on-7ss allow the coaches to see if the kid has the size, speed, feet, mechanics, hips and intangibles in person.

I think the concept is great, he said. 7-on-7s allow for skill kids to get used to the speed of the game, while going against other teams. It allows the opportunity for kids to perfect their craft, all while making mistakes, without those mistakes mattering on the scoreboard.

It is a great opportunity for coaches to coach. That is the concept of 7-on-7. Its called practice. It has now turned into parents believing that their athlete will be recruited, because of 7-on-7s. This is evident with all the club teams.Any high school coach that has coached at the FBS or FCS level will tell you that they cannot attend any of the 7s competitions, unless on their own campus, as well as they do not find kids to recruit based off of 7-on-7s.

In 7s, quarterbacks hold the ball for four seconds and run around to find open receivers, who in turn juke defenders with a bunch of moves. Running backs getinto routes all the time. Defenders dont have to read their run/pass keys.

ATHLETES:Top 10 all-around Arizona high school football players

In the past week I saw the final eight teams in a certain 7-on-7 tournament. Of those eight, six of them either run a wing T offense or an offense that consists primarily of two running backs and one tight end 80 percent of the time. These teams are out there running spread offenses in 7-on-7s, but during the season they will be 75 percent run at minimum and play with more than two receivers probably 20 percent of the time.

Youre seeing the middle-of-the-road kids, who are really good high school kids (leaving), Hathcock said. You never lost them before. Im losing them left and right now, because theyre teaming up with other teams kids and being talked up. Theyre not even Division I kids. Thats what I find the most confounding.

College coaches can tell in a couple of plays if a kid is good enough or not.Parents dont understand the recruiting process and someone at some time decided to put together a 7s tournament and market it as a recruiting opportunity. This has caused many high school coaches to place way more importance on 7s. I tell our McClintock coaches and players to use 7-on-7s as a pete and learn. Coach on the run and teach.

A lot of teams thought they were going to play a 0-10 team from last year. We told them, This is not last years team. Youre going to have to play a lot harder.

Yet parents are being told the opposite because certain gurus sell it that way for their own reasons.
